Concrete Roofing Materials
Concrete tiles are roofing materials, produced from a mixture of cement, sand, water and some additives, such as inorganic pigments. They are mainly pressed tiles, and then single, double or triple treated (besides the color based on iron oxides that are added to the mass of the composition), with 1, 2 or 3 extra layers of special coats, typically based on silicates and acrylic. In fact, the more they are treated, the more resistant they are and the longer the color lasts.
For the most part, the characteristics of concrete tiles are similar to ceramic tiles, but there are still differences. For example, a ceramic tile is also made of sand, water, additives, but it is based on clay; while the concrete tile is cement-based. If the ceramic tile is subjected to burning and drying processes at high temperatures of about 1000 degrees C, in the case of concrete tiles these processes are much simpler and done at temperatures of about 60 degrees C.
Concrete tiles are durable in all conditions and have a very long life. The low water absorption of the tile positively influences the life of the material. After casting, they are in a continuous hardening process, which lasts about 80 years. The life of a concrete roof can be up to 100 years, so you won’t have to worry too much about replacing it.
